The National Fish and Chip Awards 2019

Now in their 31st year, the National Fish & Chip Awards celebrates the nation’s favourite dish and recognise and reward businesses producing the best fish and chips across the UK.

The awards aim to support the wider fish frying trade in their effort to maintain their share of the quick service/takeaway/fast food market – and seek to:

– reward individual excellence in a range of different award categories

– raise quality standards and provide a benchmark for businesses to aspire to

– provide a robust platform from which to undertake a wide variety of media activity promoting the sector and its many diverse facets, and to encourage the continued consumption of fish and chips amongst both the UK population and visitors to the UK.

Harbourside are proud this year to be nominated as finalists in the following four categories for 2019:

From Field to Frier Award

The finalists are (in alphabetical order):

• Fish and Chips @ Weston Grove, Chester, Cheshire
• Harbourside Fish and Chips, Plymouth, Devon
• Papa’s Fish & Chips, Cleethorpes, North Lincolnshire

This award category acknowledges UK fish and chip businesses that excel in potato knowledge and responsible sourcing, as well as their ability to produce the finest quality chips.

Marketing Innovation Award

Shortlisted as finalists – the six businesses (listed in alphabetical order) are:

  • Harbourside Fish and Chips, Plymouth, Devon
  • Mister C’s, Selby, North Yorkshire
  • Nana Jan’s, Buckshaw Village, Chorley, Lancashire
  • Papa’s Fish and Chipswith branches in Cleethorpes, North Lincolnshire; Hull, East Yorkshire and Scarborough, North Yorkshire
  • Sea and Spud, Petersfield, Hampshire
  • The Fish Hoose, Thornton, Fife

To reach this stage of the competition, finalists have been assessed against a wide variety of judging criteria, including audience segmentation, marketing budget allocation, promotional activity planning and implementation and the resultant impact for the business over the past year.

Healthy Eating ‘Fish and Chips’ Award

As part of the 2019 National Fish & Chip Awards, Seafish, the public body that supports the £10bn UK seafood industry has unveiled the three leading fish and chip businesses offering healthier menu options and the finalists are:

  • Harbourside Fish and Chips, Plymouth, Devon
  • Papa’s Fish and Chips, Willerby, Hull, East Yorkshire
  • Penaluna’s Famous Fish & Chips, Hirwaun, Rhondda Cynon Taf

To reach this stage of the competition, finalists were assessed against a wide variety of criteria including menu diversification and innovation, staff training, knowledge of product nutrition and promotional activity around healthier options. They were also scored on how they collected feedback on healthier dishes from customers, as well as the actions taken as a result of the comments received.

‘Good Catch’ – The Sustainable Seafood Award

The four fish and chip businesses leading the way in sustainability (in alphabetical order) are:

  • Frasers Fish and Chips, Penzance, Cornwall
  • Harbourside Fish and Chips, Plymouth, Devon
  • Olley’s Fish Experience, Herne Hill, London
  • Penaluna’s Famous Fish & Chips, Hirwaun, Rhondda Cynon Taf

The ‘Good Catch’ award is strongly focused on the policies and procedures entrants have in place to ensure the responsible sourcing of fish and shellfish. Finalists were also judged on how well they inform their customers about the sustainable credentials of their menu, including the journey of fish from net to plate. In addition, shops were appraised on how they promote best practice in sustainability to their industry colleagues, including how they plan to tackle issues facing the responsible sourcing of seafood.
